Canned caramel sauce?

Does anyone remember a recipe that was popular years ago in which you actually boiled an unopened can of condensed milk in a pot of water for some lengthy time? I think the brand had to be Magnolia--not sure if it was the sweetened or unsweetened kind. After cooling, you'd open the can and there would be this delicious caramel type sauce that was great poured over vanilla ice cream. I'd be interested in knowing the exact method if anyone remembers the process and if the product is still available.
