Me and partner experienced Canlis for the first time this Weekend. As you can imagine we were both excited about our impending dinner experience. But to our disappointment we found the atmosphere and food less than stellar. It felt as though we entered a restaurant that needed a restaurant make over to be pulled out of the early 90s. Even for a large space there should be a feeling of intimacy. In fact, for the price, it was a let down.
We started with the "famous" Canlis salad ($10) which was a tad to vinegary. Next, was the crab leg appetizer ($12) which I liked but my partner found a little too stringy. Our main courses were Lamb Chops ($45) and scallops ($36). The lamb was tender and cooked perfectly but lacked flavor. This seemed to be the story-of-the-night. The scallops were a huge disappointment. Too say they had no flavor would be a huge understatement. Not to bring out significant flavor to scallops, at any fine dining restaurant is unacceptable. We finished with the sorbet plate ($7). This was excellent.
With our wine ($95), drinks before dinner and tip we walked out of the restaurant spending close to $300, but felt that we should have had two excellent meals- one at Lark and one at Matt's- rather the one we just had at Canlis.
