candying gone wrong?

I (tried) to make candied orange peel this afternoon, but something went wrong in the final stages. The orange peels aren't transparent, they're still somewhere between opaque and translucent. They're also still very moist, not the sugar-saturated texture I expect.

What can I do to remedy this? Any suggestions appreciated!
