My bf and I went to Campanile for the first time yesterday for their grilled cheese, which they only do on Thursdays. Caution - Thursdays are their busiest nights and we were lucky to have gotten 2 seats at the bar at 8:30 p.m. We sat at the bar b/c the restaurant doesn't offer it. Felix the bartender was great from the start - very friendly and very funny. He helped us pick a great bottle of pinot noir w/in our price range - I wish I could remember the label, but I'd recognize it if I saw it again.
We started w/ the olives and almonds appetizer, which had lots of garlic in it and some orange peels - looked like it was all sauteed together. The olives were huge and pretty salty, but the mixture went well together.
Then we shared the tomato soup w/ no bacon (non-pork eaters). The most amazing tomato soup I've ever had - sure beats Campbell's =)
Then we shared the grilled cheese w/ onions. That dish came w/ fries, which were also great, and a spinach salad w/ light dressing. The grilled cheese was also the best I've ever had. Grilled to perfection!
Then for dessert, we shared the ice cream sandwhich w/ espresso hot fudge. The hot fudge by itself is very bitter, but w/ the ice cream sandwiches - again, amazing! There were 3 mini ice cream sandwhiches - one filled w/ vanialla, one w/ chocolate, and the third one we couldn't figure out - but it was very refreshing, almost a minty taste to it. The cookie part of the sandwichi, by itself, was really good. A wonderful end to an amazing dinner and night out at Campanile!
Price - our price limit for the bottle was 100, so actually the dinner ended up being half of what our bottle cost. Oh, also, the bartender comped our dessert which was very nice.
We will definitely be going back soon!
