CALLING JIM LEFF re: "SAINTED AREPA LADY"

surly | Jan 22, 2006 12:28 AM

so i've heard many great things about "the sainted arepa lady", who operates an arepa cart on the northwest corner of roosevelt/79th in jackson heights, queens. i read a glowing review about her and her corn cakes in the nyc chowhound guide, and noted that she's only at that location "on weekends after 10:30pm".

so tonight (sat 1/21/06) i happened to be in queens around that time and headed over to that corner to look for her. unfortunately, she was nowhere in sight.

my question to any/all chowhounds out there (esp. jim leff, if you're reading this):

what happened to the arepa lady? did she move? does she set up shop at a different time? is she no longer around? did she vanish into thin air?

my buddy actually inquired about her to passersby on the street, but to no avail.

is it possible that she normally sets up shop at 10:30AM, not PM? or is she simply no longer around?

and if that's the case, any tips out there on a close/adequate substitute for the arepa lady?
