i stopped in TEHUITZINGO mexican deli/grocery today as a follow up to a discussion some of us had on the whats's my craving board regarding huitlacoche, the funky good corn musk filling. props to chowhound.com i'd been meaning to try this place so that inspired me. they have a nice if tight little mini restaurant in back. sorry to say no huitlacoche today, but while i ate there were several people who asked about it while ordering so lets all keep trying.
well what a superb chalkboard menu of all your taco favorites they have. all the usual taqueria suspects like carnitas and chicharron, etc.--but also somewhat more atypical items such as lengua (beef tongue), sangre (goat tripe) and suadereo (belly). impressive. i had a flor de calabaza (pumpkin flower) quesadilla/taco? and a cecina (salty beef) taco. both were the correct small two corn tortilla sized affairs but were filling enough and very very good!! nice selection of salsas and those pickled carrots too.
i didnt have anything to drink but the deli cooler has evrything, jarritos sangria and penefiel sodas and much more.
on the way out check out the cooler for a wonderful selection of SLEY tropical water ice pops (thanks for the tip canchito). i guess they have some chili flavored versions, like chili-pineapple, etc. but not today. i did have an outstanding icy tamarindo flavored popsicle tho. also, the guys up front (owners?) chatted me up about how i liked it while i paid, which to me is a sign they want to keep improving. everybody looked real happy in here and now i can see why:
