My conscience keeps nudging me to submit a report on our trip round N California and Oregon. I can only plead coming back to four weeks worth in the in tray, mother in law in hospital, and a daughter who gets married in 6 weeks, as an excuse.
So, no proper report, but here are a few scribbled notes:
Portland ~ Wisper it gently for fear of starting a riot, we liked Portland much more than San Francisco. Maybe there were more real people, less tourists; maybe it was less hills; maybe the sunshine brought out the best in Portlanders; but we had a ball.
Portland ~ The Benson ~ Why does anyone stay anywhere else in Portland? Loved the lobby bar for cocktails, and for live jazz with our nightcaps.
Portland ~ Piazza Italia ~ Great atmosphere, terrific value, shared platter starter, 2 entrees, shared dessert, 1 cocktail, bottle of wine, 2 coffes, tip, $70. Food: Mrs P excellent duck confit, me OK lasange.
Portland ~ Hubers ~ OK, living on history a little?
Portland ~ Ringside ~ Sound, professional, a good choice for a beef fix if the budget won't stretch to the big name steakhouses.
Portland ~ Jakes Crawfish ~ Great atmosphere, overall we enjoyed our evening and would return without hesitation. Food a little patchy, 2 excellent starters, 1 average entree, 1 poor entree, 2 excellent desserts.
Portland ~ Portland City Grill ~ Went up for cocktails at 18:00 on Friday evening. Packed and throbbing, the barmen were doing a great job, fabulous views, fabulous girls, made me feel 22, where are all the young men in this city?
Bend ~ The Riverhouse ~ Nice place to stay in Bend. Ate in Crossings, their steak restaurant. Good beef, competently cooked, with good sides. Why do they have to make the portions ridiculously big? Smallest steak on the menu 22ozs unless you want surf and 12oz turf! Service homely.
Rest of the report on California board.
PS We had a fantastic time, many thanks to all the hounds who responded to my posts, and to the many folks we met on our journey who helped us with gems of local info.
