Calexico/Park Slope - mmmm....

Miss Poste | Jan 17, 2002 11:20 AM

My husband is a recent transplant from California and forever bemoaning the lack of good Mexican food in our neighborhood - Park Slope.

On a blustery Saturday night we happened upon Calexico on 5th Ave. - right around Warren St. It was a little rough at the edges looking from the outside, but that didn't stop us. Plus, the windows were steamed up, and we could hear a party - complete with salsa music - going on in one of the dining rooms.

We walked in, and what a find. I had the chalupas - enormous, delicous, topped with just the right amount of crisp, chilly lettuce and creamy white cheese. My husband had his favorite, carnitas, and swore that he had been transported back to the west coast. The fried plantains were so-so, and I asked for fresher ones and they were happily supplied.

We had plenty of leftovers, and our bill came to $13.

We haven't been back yet, but my fingers are crossed that the food will be as scrumptious next time around.
