Driving through Potrero Hill after an appointment my husband and I lurched to a stop at the corner of 17th and Utah, curious about a sandwich shop we'd not seen before. I am pleased to say that this turned out to be a really great little discovery for us.
They list all their meats, cheeses, and breads on a board, but other than 2 or 3 specific sandwiches listed the rest is up to you. I asked if they could make a sandwich combination of italian meats and they were happy to oblige with a combo of peppered salami, mortadella, and provolone cheese on a great, generously sized roll. They offer homemade hot or mild garlic spread, homemade sun dried tomatoes, mustard or mayo, olive oil, balsamic vinegar, and peppers as additions to the sandwich. In what I think is a traditional fashion, there's not lettuce, onion, pickles, or regular tomatoes. I think all sandwiches were $6.95.
Each meat for my sandwich was sliced to order and piled on generously. I asked for a small splash of the olive oil and of the vinegar, the sun dried tomatoes, and begged for a couple of slices of the whole red onion I saw sitting on a cutting board waiting to be used for one of their prepared pasta salads. My sandwich maker added the mild garlic spread without my invitation, which turned out to be a welcome addition (though not recommended if you are headed into business meetings). The sun dried tomatoes were plump, fresh, and slick with the olive oil in which they had been marinating. My guy told me "not to tell" the head guy about the addition of the onion--but I'm compulsively honest about good food, so can't help telling all of you.
We also got a small container of an orzo salad--my husband really enjoyed this, but I thought it was nothing special. The sandwich was the star and was more than enough food. Honestly I could have saved half for another meal, but I *forced* myself to finish it off.
All the sandwich makers were incredibly friendly, and the few small tables inside were all full with folks busy chewing. Apparently they've been open about 2 months. I think this is a great new spot, and will definitely make a point of going back.
