I happened to wander by the new Cako Bakery yesterday, on O'Farrell just west of Powell. It's a fairly small storefront, but almost impossible to miss because of its huge sign and large windows, through which rows upon rows of extra large cupcakes are clearly visible.
Presentation: Cako's cupcakes are not only huge, the designs really appeal to me. I would describe the aesthetic as bold but simple. They are complicated enough that it's obvious a home cook did not make them, but not so frilly that you feel like you are eating a piece of art and not a homey treat.
Choices: There were at least 10 choices when I got there, plus half a dozen types of mini cupcakes and some cookies and coffee cake as well. The mini cupcakes are frosted but not decorated, so they look much more like homemade treats.
Flavor: I had a mini chocolate cupcake with chocolate frosting ($1). I stuck it in my mouth about a block down the street, and almost turned back to get a large one ($3.50, but almost certainly over four times as big). The cake was the real winner for me. It's been a long time since I've found a good chocolate cake that isn't dense like a flourless cake or a brownie. Cako's cake balances flavor intensity with fluffiness. The frosting, too, was deliciously chocolate flavored. Lovers of a perfectly silky chocolate ganache might find fault with it for being ever so slightly textured, but really I'm grasping at straws to find anything wrong with it. To me, it was a near perfect chocolate cupcake. And for $1, it's right up there with a few pieces of See's candy in my book in terms of bang for buck chocolate craving satiation.
The link function isn't working for me, perhaps because Cako is new. Here's the yelp page with map and photos
