I've been wanting to try this famed place for about a year now. Yesterday, as if guided by some power, I found myself heading over there as I came home from work (and I don't live near there at all!)
The place was sort of creepy - no lights on, half blocked off my a baking shelf covered in plastic with a printed sign that says EMPLOYEES ONLY, hiding the bakery portion I guess. Kid working there was practically comatose. All that seemed to be offered were pre-sliced single slices in plastic containers and a few whole cakes in a not so transparent display case. (steam? dirt?)
The Cake. I chose the coconut cake and it was...sorta crappy. DRY! When I lifted it out of the plastic onto a plate it broke apart into chunks it was so dry. Frosting was minimal, and what there was, was grainy - as if granulated sugar was used and it didn't melt. The coconut was the packaged type you buy in the bakery aisle of your Key Foods - super sugary artifical tasting, not fresh.
Please tell me it was an off day. I feel sad. One shouldn't feel sad after eating cake.
