I'm packing for a week in a beach house that will probably not be well-equiped for cooking. One of the kids travelling with us will turn 14 while we're there, and responded to my offer of a birthday cake: he'd like a Boston Cream Pie.
I'm used to hauling cooking gear around when I travel, but there's a voice in my head saying....a cake mix would be so much easier, when combined with a homemade custard with lots of good vanilla and a good chocolate glaze.
Is anyone familiar with different brands of cake mix? Are they okay? One better than another? I have access to Whole Foods in NYC -- I don't know whether they produce cake mixes. The supermarket in NC where we're going is the Food Lion chain which will have the usual brands.
