A bunch of us made a pilgrimage to Cake Love for lunch today (cake for lunch every once in a while is good for the soul). What was nice was that we got to sample a lot of the goods.
The best of the lot: Yellow Cupcake with Ganache. The ganache was heavenly. We also had a Chocolate Cupcake with Vanilla Icing. The cake was good but the icing was just about pure butter. He obviously does not skimp on ingredients. However, the icing, though rich and buttery, did not echo vanilla at all. Perhaps his chocolate or strawberry icings are better. We also sampled two "Crunchy Feet", a chocolate sunrise and a citron. Both good. These are upside down little pound cakes. The eclair was tremendous in size. The pastry was just OK, but the cream in the middle was incredible. I ended up just scooping it out with my finger. He should just rig his pastry bag so that the cream is on tap. Just really really delicious.
He also had some interesting (and huge) cream puffs...one was filled with cilantro and lime cream. That is what I am going to try next time.
I was also disappointed to find out that they had sold out of Venus bars. I guess you have to get there pretty early in the day to nab one of these. I had one before, and it was quite amazing. Layers of torte, and mocha hazelnut cream and topped with meringue cookies. YUM! Does anybody else know if this is a regular occurrence? Or did I just hit it on a bad day?
I would definitely go again. That ganache could really get in your bloodstream.
Still licking my fingers,
