Cafe Zaiya - New Japanese Bakery

Akiko | Aug 16, 2002 12:17 PM

Did someone post about this and I missed it? I was walking by 41st street between Madison and 5th and saw that a new bakery had opened in between the Japanese grocery store and book shop.

It's a decent size and has all the wonderful goodies that you'd find in the french/japanese style bakeries in Japan (similar to Little Mermaid type bakeries). They have great flaky pastries, french bread pizzas with unusual toppings (the Japanese like to put corn on their pizza), paninis, yaki soba sandwiches, steam cakes, tofu bread, green tea rolls, etc. They also make salads and sushi bentos as well as a variety of homestyle japanese dishes that change daily.

To my delight, they also make Karei Pan.... which is a deep fried bread/donutty type of savory with curry in the middle.

Very yummy.
