I've tried Cafe Surfas twice since Dommy's recommendation the other day. (It's a cafe next to the gourmet foods and kitchenware store Surfas at Washington and National.) The first time I had the roasted tomato and fig sandwich with Tallegio cheese -- after it came off the panini press it was all kind of mushed together, but tasty. My pear crumble bar was also kind of mushy, but I wanted to try it again. The second time I had the herbed tuna sandwich which was excellent with the sharp cheddar cheese, and Dommy was right...the lavender lemon bar is stupendous! Lots of nice little touches like a cup of granola and a cup of pickles with your sandwich. It looks like they'll have an alcohol license soon, although the chilly patio tables aren't the most cozy places to imbibe, I would think. Plus I ended up with a black pearl chocolate bar and a bunch of cheese slicers from Surfas...this place is definitely foodie heaven.
