Cafe Nicolaus - Washington Square Brookline

Had never been here before, so decided to give it a whirl. I have a rule that whenever I go to a pizza place for the first time I order a simple plain cheese pie. My theory is that you can tell much about a pizza place by how they make a simple cheese pizza. In this respect, Café Nicolaus failed miserably. I ate a lifeless pizza – the sort of pizza you would except to get at a sporting event or at a mall. The sauce was bland, and the crust was almost non-existent. The sign in front says “Pizza the way your Mama makes it!” or something like that. Well, my mother makes her own pizza once in awhile, and I assure you it is ten times better than what I had. How this place has two locations (one in Newton Center) is beyond me – I would rather have gone to Papa Gino’s.
