As a 'Nipponphile foodie', the closing of 'Shiso Tree, Markham' a while back was a sad loss and had a profound impact on me and my family.....all enthusiastic fan of Japanese cuisine! To us, their highly enjoyable 'Japanese/Italian fusion style pasta', rustic Japanese snacks offering plus their convenient location was really hard to replace!
Fast forward to today. Whilst driving down south on Woodbine in search of something different and yummy for lunch, I noticed 'Cafe N' One' across from the East-side Chevy Dealership. Recalling a past posting by another fellow foodie, who endorsed this Japanese style pasta and dessert place with a positive thumbs-up, I decided to give the place a try......and am I glad I did
This smallish ' Coffee, Souffle, Pasta ' specialist Cafe, offers a fairly condensed menu, from which I ordered the following:
- "Mango and Passion fruit Soda" ( refreshing, not too sweet, delicious and full of ' Ikura ' texture like 'bubble' with sweet fruity syrup filling......an intriguing creation!...and a take of El Bulli, molecular cuisine - Lychee Bubble?! Ha!
- Yuzu Momo ( this stirred fry Spaghetti with chicken thigh pieces, Yuzu, Soy, Onion, Cherry tomatoes garnished with garlic bread side, arrived piping hot and packed full of exotic flavor and to my surprise, 'wok-hay' flambeed smokiness......fantastic! Totally unexpected pleasure! )
- Creme Brulee Japanese Souffle Pancake ( To me, no meal is complete without being signed off by a dessert. This ' light-as-air ', fluffy , eggy and creamy Souffle pancake almost left me speechless. Again, it was soooo unexpectedly xxxxx good!
For sure I will be back!....but definitely after lunch hour since the place was PACKED even at 2.15 pm! Social distancing between tables was minimal and noise level from all the indoor masks-less patrons was uncomfortably high!
Glad I managed to grab a patio table! ( though Covid might not kill me but car exhaust pollution from busy Woodbine sure will! :D )
