Son The Eater and Girlfriend are in town, and I’m living temporarily in Mission Beach with no kitchen. It’s Sunday, and the kids need breakfast-- and every place we go is JAMMED. The year-round Spring Break crowds kill my appetite, and particularly when they mill and crowd outside a restaurant I like. It’s a no-brainer. I take the kids to my new favorite place, Café Mono. If there were Food Justice in the world, Café Mono would be jammed, too. Happily for us it’s not. The kids get spinach/feta omelets (with fresh fruit, toast, and potatoes). I order Mariana’s homemade Spinach Pie (Sundays only). We all order Mike’s exceptionally expert cappuchinos (Café Calabria coffee) which are served in lovely brown cups and saucers. The bonus is outdoor dining, on a beautiful Sunday sunny morning. (Take that Mission and Cantina!) But wait ! Bonus #2 is that on Sundays Mike makes cevapi for his Bosnian friends-- and glory be, he sends us a plate! “Bosnian sausage” he calls it, but it’s more like a beef kabob. It arrives on a homemade roll (Mariana) with raw onion and a gloriously RED bell pepper sauce (or salsa) on the side, which Wikipedia says is traditional. I love this place.
