Cafe Mariah - Madison, WI

I went to this new restaurant on Atwood with a friend on Saturday. It is right next to the Barrymore Theatre. They are set up so that you walk in and order, you take a number and they bring the food out to your table - pretty casual.

The menu looks ambitious - lots of sandwiches - Cuban pork, grilled yellowfin tuna, blackened salmon, jerk chicken, and of course, burgers. They also serve breakfast until 2 pm on Sat/sun, but we were too late for that.

I had a tostada with black beans and sauteed veggies. I liked the light hand that was used with the cheese and sour cream. The salsa that came with it was nice and spicy. The tortilla itself I didn't really eat, but it was not your usual deep fried flour tortilla - it was more like a wrap-stle tortilla that had been flash-fried - $5.95

My friend had the grilled chicken sandwich with pesto and jack cheese, which was nicely done. I believe this was in the $6.50 range.

We split an excellent piece of carrot cake with cream cheese frosting. For fans of Sprecher, they have root beer and cream soda in bottles.

I think this deserves more exploration - the menu is all over the map, so I'm not sure how they will pull all that off, but at these prices I think I'll try again. Anyone else been?
