Cafe des Amis

Chez Papa's second location, Cafe des Amis, recently opened just down the block on 18th. This is the old space where "Just for You" had been housed, prior to their move to larger digs in DogPatch. In addition to the small plates they offer, similar to Chez Papa, they are doing a few crepes -- both buckwheat galettes and sweet dessert crepes. The place is open all day, with just 2 (2-person) tables inside and counter seating. I believe they are also offering steak frites in the evening.

We checked things out for lunch today, and had no problem snagging the tables, while Chez Papa was packed. I had a salad nicoise, which was tasty but had a bit more dressing than is my preference. Also sadly no radishes and lots of red leaf lettuce, so it was more of an Americanized version than the ones I ate in Nice. My husband had a galette with a really nice chicken-in-mustard-sauce filling, and my business partner had a simple tomato and mozzarella salad... and then a crepes suzette. In the past I've never understood the fuss about these, but this one was great -- good buttery orange flavor and just slightly sweet.

This will be a nice addition to the neighborhood for a glass of wine and light bite. We also loved their ice tea, which has a slight fruit flavor that they said was passion fruit.
