Cafe de la Paz, Berkeley

george osner | Oct 4, 199901:26 AM

We had a lovely lunch in Berkeley today at the Cafe de la Paz, on Shattuck a block or two south of Cedar.

I was quite taken with the Cachapas de Jojoto con Chile, pancakes with kernels of fresh sweet corn drenched not with syrup as one usually expects in this country, but with a red chile (mild) crema & topped with queso fresco. Slightly hot, just enough to know it's there.

Elise had a curried vegetable hash with potatos & plantains-the curry was a perfect, subtle Carribean style. Blythe had blackened salmon with a fruit salsa, Craig opted for huevos con vegetales, quesos,y chile verde, with a heaping pile of garlic-chile home fries alongside. We started with a plate of guacamole.

I sampled it all & couldn't find a flavor I was unhappy with.

All this food, with drinks, tax, tip...$55 for the 4 of us...and we took food home.
