Cafe Bar in Astoria - the best brunch

Dan Sonenberg | Jun 14, 2004 01:26 PM

I have now visited Cafe Bar for Weekend brunch enough times to say that it's the best brunch I have had anywhere in New York, let alone Astoria. They have a fairly limited menu, but they prepare everything which such care and culinary finesse. Yesterday I had scrambled eggs w/ tomato and feta, and my wife had a toasted croissant w/ egg and cheese and granola w/ yogurt and fruit. The point here isn't exciting/unusual menu options (tho there are a couple), but that everything is cooked with love. The scrambled eggs are fluffy and delicious, not overwhelmed w/ feta but just perfectly seasoned with it. The home fries have little bits of asparagus in them. The egg in the croissant was poached to perfection, again, with just the right touch of cheese - not gobs of gooeyness - and served with lovely baby greens (including pieces of arrugula!). I have also tried their shrimp wrap on lavash bread, and several of their other egg dishes - I am never disappointed. They also serve fresh squeezed juice, smoothies, and the full line of coffee and alcoholic drinks. I have yet to find a better brunch in New York City. The prices are Manhattanish - but Astoria is an expensive place anyway, and it really tastes like you're getting what you pay for here.

Oh yeah - it's on 34th Ave. and 36th Street. Near S'Agapo.
