Went to Carambola last night to celebrate Valentine's Day thinking it would be less hectic than tonight and it was really underwhelming. This was the third time We've been and the food and service was better last year on Valentine's Day proper(Carambola was the scene of our first date). Our server came over after we'd been there for about 10 min and said he "was in a rush". I almost told him to go do what he needed to do and come back beacause we were not in a rush - though I forgive him since English was clearly his second language and maybe he didn't mean to be so blunt. No one knew much about the wine, including the bartender so we gambled with a zin and a carmeniere with our entrees both of which weren't great with the spicy dishes - but I guess I knew beer would be better any way. Had the "famous springrolls" and they were fine but not destincitive. I couldn't really discern what was inside them just by way of taste and had to trust what the menu said. My date had the "ground pork simmered in cocnut milk with fried rice for dipping". It was tasty but was akin to a big bowl of pork chili thickened with coconut milk. Just way to heavy for an appetizer (perhaps all the apps are meant to share). I had the duck simmered in green curry and I could have done better myself, honestly. It was a big bowl of green curry broth with shredded duck and napa cabbage with a round of roasted eggplant on top. It tasted good but was kinda boring visually and texturely. My date had the lamb curry which was a bone in lamb steak with a dark red curry sauce. I didn't tate it but he liked it fine. All in all, I think this is our last Valentine's Day celebration at Carambola and probably our last visit. The bill came to about $100.00 with wine and a cocktail each - Not really worth it IMO.
