Buying a bottle for an unknown palate?

First time looking around the wine section of CH. Very exciting stuff, I know.

I would in no way consider myself knowledgeable in wine. I know enough to satisfy myself, and most of my preferences in wine have all been developed from my father's tastes. Eventually, I'd like to become more immersed and more experienced with wines, but that's neither here nor there.

I'm attending a house warming party for a coworker. It's frankly a temporary location for them (they just got into the country), and I really don't know them too well, so I landed on possibly getting them a bottle of wine and a salt shaker. The problem is that I have no idea what wine to get. Do you guys have go-to bottles that you tend to give if you aren't sure of a person's particular tastes? Something that probably isn't too strong or unusual tasting? I know it might be a weird question.

The only thing I ask is for red wines. Price range is around or less than $25. Everything else is pretty up in the air.

Info that might be of use to you (or not): We live in Baltimore, MD. The coworker and her roommate are under 30 years old and from Brazil.

Thank you all so much.
