We finally made it to The Dinner Bell in McComb, Mississippi, on Mardi Gras day (we believe we're finally real New Orleanians, in that we left town for Mardi Gras!). Lots of other people had the same idea too, so we had to wait 40 minutes, but it was worth it. This is a favorite Jane & Michael Stern destination, serving southern boarding house-style on huge communal round tables -- fried chicken, chicken & dumplings, barbecued ribs, sausage, sweet potato casserole, butter beans, lima beans, crowder peas, rice and gravy, cornbread, sweet tea, etc. etc. etc., all for $10.
BUT -- if you look on the web site, it seems the owners are ready to retire after running the restaurant since 1978 and they are looking for someone to buy the restaurant and take over a great tradition with an established clientele. Sounds like a nifty opportunity for some cooking Chowhounds!
