The discussion about Costco below made me think about this. There's no question Costco has great buys on very good (not great) beef especially, for me, the ribeye, which is a tasty cut in general. I also have had good luck with their tri-tip, which is fine for barbecuing with a spicy marinade. I saw someone on here had the good fortune to find hangar/onglet steaks there, but I've never seen them (not in Glendale or Van Nuys anyway).
But what about the really good stuff? I used to buy what I thought was wonderful prime porterhouse at Chalet Gourmet before it turned into a squeezed-down Bristol Farms. They don't seem to have the same steaks anymore. I tried the place on top of Beverly Glen but it didn't really impress me. Maybe I should try again. And there's a butcher in Bev Hills that supposedly supplies the restaurants. Should I go there? Inquiring carnivores want to know (with a special thanks to the makers of statin drugs)!
