Buttonwillow: Tita's Loncheria fabulous pupusas

Many years ago when I set about to learn about pupusas, Tita's was my first or maybe second pupusa. I thought it was great.

Many years and pupusas later, Tita';s is still the best I've ever had. The $2,75 cheese and squash pupusa covered a dinner-sized paper plate, oozing cheesy goodness. A bag with lots of curtido, chopped cabbage, remains the best in that category, even better than I remember. Even the red sauce was great. It was a filling meal.

My friend had two tacos for $1 which he said were good but on the greasy side. There is a salsa and condiment tray to the right on the truck.

The five star rating is for the pupusa.

The restaurant is 3 miles in town. However, the lunch truck, open 9am - midnight (and 2 am some nights), is right off the exit almost across the street from motel 6

Tita's also serves breakfast burritos, menudo, tacos (including tripas and fish), tortas, burritos, sopes, combo plates and Salvadoran tamales. They were doing a brisk business and we were the only gringos there. Nice people running the truck.

The area has added lots of places since I was forced to spend a few days in the Buttonwillow Motel 6 due to an ill cat. God bless Motel 6 for taking pets.

At that time it was only fast food and a truck stop which forced me to drive three miles into the town to find other eats ... and there was Tita's. There are at least a half dozen places right on the freeway including a Mexican buffet.

My guess is that Tita's is still the best bet. Highly recommended for the pupusas.

There are lots of outdoor picnic tables with an awning to keep off the sun.
