The better butter? – Vella's Bear Flag Brand?

Krys | Mar 17, 200503:20 AM

Stopped by Vella Cheese in Sonoma and noticed quite a few locals were buying the butter. I asked about it, and was told “It’s only Bear Flag Butter”.

I bought some and it is now my favorite butter. The sticks don’t come in regular sizes. The pieces are cut irregularly. It says ‘lightly salted’, but I find probably one of the saltier butters. There is a fresh creaminess to it.

I don’t use butter much and when I do I buy it directly from the vendor. So, unless I’m desperate, I buy Strauss Butter on Saturday at the Ferry Plaza Farmer’s Market. This way I can be assured that there wasn’t any mishandling during the shipping process.

Until recently the unsalted Strauss was my favorite local butter. I will actually drive up to Sonoma to buy this butter the next time I need some. Three sticks of Strauss are still in the freezer from Christmas. The Bear Flag stick went in a week.

Is there any other local butter besides Strauss and Bear Flag?
