The burrito hunt is over! Whoo-hoo!

Ever since I got off the plane from LAX I'd been
looking for a burrito in NYC that was even halfway
decent, and failing. Not only do most New York burrito
shops seem to have no idea how to prepare the tortilla
(hint: the answer is not "throw it, dry, onto the
grill") but they can't even get the shape right:
instead of cylinders that can be held in one hand I've
been getting throw pillows full of crap. Then I poked
through some of the Chowhound burrito threads, followed
a few leads that turned out to be duds, and then struck
gold: Kitchen/Market in Chelsea (8th Ave at 21st),
suggested by one, was clearly a place
where they knew what burritos were supposed to be like
and hadn't just heard of them third-hand. Even so, I
still had problems: I kept getting distracted by
froufrou fillings like green chile posole and barley
corn salad, and the hot sauce they use was insistent
on rendering my tongue unable to sense any flavor other
than "ouch." I almost gave up, but figured I owed them
one more chance and ordered the burrito that most
closely approximated the one I'd actually been looking
for: a three-cheese San Francisco with black beans and
salsa fresca but NO HOT SAUCE. And it was GREAT, far
and away the best I've had since leaving California.
So partly I wanted to thank this board for pointing me
to this place; partly I wanted to second Sara's
recommendation; but mainly I just wanted to share my
joy. Yay!
