Burgundy on a Budget

Queequegx | Dec 23, 201409:53 AM

My fiancé and I will be spending a couple of days in Burgundy in June. I've read many posts about Burgundy, and the restaurants that have been recommended sound wonderful, but they also seem like they are probably more expensive than we can afford.

I would appreciate some recommendations for lower priced meals, perhaps less than 60E for two, including a bit of wine. We like pretty much everything, and are aware that we're likely to be eating mostly simple food on our budget. We're happy to make lunch our big meal, if that helps, though for recommended restaurants I've looked up, even that seems unlikely.

We also plan to picnic and eat on our own for several meals. I've seen Alain Hess mentioned as one place to buy cheese and charcuterie, but are there other places we should check out? I think we'll check out the Gaugry cheesemakers as well. We'll be there on a Wednesday and Thursday, so I'm afraid we'll miss the big weekend markets.

I would love recommendations for bakeries and the like, also. I know that Burgundy is known for their pain d'épices - anywhere we should seek out for that? What about other regional specialties that we shouldn't miss?

We're also interested in sampling some wines, but I'm extremely overwhelmed by everything I've read on the subject. We don't know much about wine beyond that we like it. We're novices, and could really use some pointers on where to go - maybe 2-3 places. I know tours are often recommended, but with a small budget, I'd rather spend my money on the wine itself.

Thanks in advance for any help.
