My burger drought, 3 favorite experiences ending at The Royal James

Torpedo | Jul 10, 202003:11 PM     2

I gave up eating beef many years ago, but I still crave a great hamburger and a side of fries.

I admitted to friends that I would only eat a beef burger again in only 3 places.

One of those beloved places no longer exists. Here are my 3.

#1. My grandparents Mom & Pop penny candy corner store, Seward Pennsylvania. (Long gone, but a fond and potent memory. Last burger enjoyed there around 1968). Grandmas burgers were thin, fried with butter in a cast iron skillet and served on a Sunbeam bun with catsup and a bag of Snyders chips, simple and good. We usually drank a fountain Coke or what we called a Cherry Smash, cherry syrup and seltzer with ice. Seated on a swirling stool at a 12 customer counter a true soda fountain experience. I really need a time travel machine.

#2. Les Bon Temps Rouler!, NOLA. The night I was there I was in a delrious out worldly state of mind. Since coming off 3 days of full on photo shoot direction and client interaction I was in a Twilight Zone episode for sure. I do remember the fantastic burgers, I ate one, very soon after I had another all while listening to the cajun sounds of the "Rattle Snake Shakes” band. A trippy night for sure as I ate, drank and stared at the bands lead rubboard player. Her mesmerizing hands kept me spellbound to the backbone beat on each song.

#3. The Royal James, Beaufort NC. This is where I turned 50 and broke the beef burger drought. The Royal James a glorious greasy spoon with soul and a laid back spirit. Just sit at the bar drink beer and kick your shoes off and hang out. Classic Brunswick pools tables and one of the best jukebox playlists I’ve ever heard. The burgers are simple, fried on a griddle and topped with their secret sweet onion sauce, yum. Great fries and onion rings and wash em down with a bud. This is one of my favorite eating drinking spots mostly because from the outside it frightens the tourists from stoping in.

I never got back on the beef thing full force again. I’m not a fan of steak or other cuts of beef. But the juicy hamburger is a thing of delight and joy not easily replicated by turkey or the new fangled plant based fast food offerings.

Your thoughts, Cheers!
