Wingfield’s is on D Magazine’s top 8 burger places in the Greater Dallas Metropolitan area and they are currently letting readers vote for their favorite burger (see link) so this was an obvious choice for me to pay them a visit. They are located in South Dallas close to Interstate 35. This is not an area you would want to walk around alone at night, but this was in the middle of the day so we were fine.
The sign was the only thing that tells you that you were at Wingfield’s. The building was probably the smallest I have ever seen for a burger joint. It was the true definition of a hole-in-the-wall. There were maybe 4 or 5 parking spots outside the restaurant and once filled people start parking behind your car so you have to ask them to move when you headed out with your burger.
The place has no seating area inside or outside so this was purely a take-out place. There was hardly any place to stand and make an order but we still managed. I ordered a bacon cheese burger and my guest ordered a double bacon cheese burger. They were cooking the burgers right in front of you on an electric griddle and you could instantly see that the patties were huge (at least ½ lbs each) but he still insisted on getting the double burger. They announced the waiting time would be 15 minutes. The primary reason for this was probably that they just started out cooking burgers and they were making maybe 30 at a time or so.
This was a busy place. During the 15 minute wait many patrons were coming and going (I guess they ordered in advance..?).
We finally got the burgers and went to a nearby park to consume them.
I must admit that this burger was tall! The bacon was curled so much and the patty so thick that the burger was probably 6 inch tall standing up on its own. The bun was definitely a special bun and it was sturdy enough to keep the burger together for the entire meal. The lettuce, tomatoes, red onions were super fresh but the most impressive was the bacon. I have never nor will I ever get bacon this good again. It was curly, not too crunchy, not too chewy, it was perfection, (sigh) it was divine! And there was plenty of it on this burger!
The cheese was not overpowering, but made an impact, as you would expect in a cheeseburger. The patty was well done and that is normally not my cup of tea but it was well seasoned and still very juicy and very tasty.
The fries were just average and you would not want to go to Wingfield’s for the fries. But you definitely want to go here for the burgers. They are the best burger I have tasted till date and I am rating them with a 9 out of 10. If they cooked the burgers to order and used a real grill for the burgers they might be able to get close to a perfect 10, but the quest is still on for that. What a relief!
I managed to check out if they kept the place clean, and by looking at the floor inside the kitchen and around the griddle, this looked like a very clean place! It is tough to rate this restaurant for the atmosphere, but I am giving it a 3 for the lack of effort and the entire focus on the burger instead. It was quite an experience that I recommend everyone to try. Please make sure to bring cash, as this is the only payment they take.
You absolutely MUST visit this place, but keep in mind that this is take-out only, so plan to take it to a nearby park or live close enough that you can take it home. Or eat it in your car if you have to get it detailed later that day anyway.
