Hi all, new here but so glad I found this website! I've spent the last 3 months in Birmingham working a project and got a chance to try the 3 "best" burger joints in town. The following are my rankings which don't agree with the "official" newspaper reader's poll.
3)Harry's Place, Hwy 31 South in Hoover. This was voted "Best Burger Around" by the newspaper poll last year, but I put it third on my list. Deluxe Cheeseburger, small fry and drink was $5.24 plus tax. The patty was tender and just slightly seasoned with salt and pepper but not quite big enough for the oversized bun. The fixings were fresh, all the way included lettuce, tomato, pickle, onion and mayo. Mustard by request. The best part of the burger was the bun. Toasting nicely cut-side-down on the same griddle used to cook the burgers gave it a great crunch and excellent flavor. They also had hot dogs, chicken salad sandwich and homemade malts and shakes. Fries were good but nothing special.
2) Hamburger Heaven, 2 locations (Hwy 78 in Irondale and Hwy 280 in Inverness). I ate a both locations and the quality was consistant. The patty had a better taste than Harry's but the bun wasn't as good. Fixings were overall better quality and fresher. Lots of options on their menu and they have diff size burgers for diff appetites. "Best Burger Around" finalist
1) Sammy's on Airport Blvd. Just off I-20 on the Airport exit, go away from the airport and it's on your left after a couple of lights. They make their burgers thick and large with a hint of traditional Greek seasoning which did it for me. Lettuce, tomato, pickles, mayo, ketchup AND (the best part) grilled red onions top a double fistfull of burger and melted cheese that gets my vote as best. Fries are good and seasoned with popcorn salt. They also have daily specials like meatloaf, fried chicken, etc, with vegetables. Their camelrider sandwiches look great as well, but I can't pass up the burger to try one. "Best Burger Around" finalist, but if you ask me they got robbed.
