I recently visited Thai Angel (141 Grand St ), but had accidently gone next door to Bun Soho (143 Grand St ) and thought that that was the shop with $2 dollar Cheng Mai Beer, and was told that 'its next door'. I stepped out of Bun Soho and went next door to Thai Angel.
The light in Thai Angel was a bit dim, and returned to Bun Soho as the place has a nice comfortable decor and atmosphere, and better light for reading the newspaper or a book.
Thai Angel is Thai, Bun says it is Vietnamese, but it is not.
I had a squid, or what our former Colonizers call Cuttlefish (Sa Lach Muc Xao Lan spicy vietnamese salsa verde). For $11.00 I had a quite small iron fry pan with a handle which contained thick cuts of squid and a spicy sauce with chopped onion and green pepper. After eating it I was left with that sugar sweet residual taste in my mouth even though I asked for and got handed a cup of cut raw hot peppers of green color to add to the dish to spice it up.
Though the light at Bun Soho was better for reading the newspaper than Thai Angel, I do not appreciate reading the newspaper or a book to Techno music. My seat just happened to be under the speaker too.
On top of this I ordered Vietnamese Coffee and this was an espresso with condensed sweetened milk in it, and did not know that until it was brought to me.
I could have paid a dollar or more less for Espresso down the street in Little Italy, and could have gone further down to Hester and Chrystie to Cong Ly for real Vietnamese coffee.
I will return to the neigborhood and visit the competition, Thai Angel, which does not have the Soho funky decor, but perhaps the food is more consistent with what they say it is. And the wait staff there is Thai.
Bun Soho might be good to kick back with one or two friends and chat, order up some small dishes and have cocktails or beer, but don't recommend the place for serious eating of Vietnamese cuisine.
They do have a nice atmosphere and a cocktail menu, though no nothing of how they might be.
