Bun Chao Tom, Nem Nuong at Com Tam Thanh San Jose (pic)

Stopped in at one of my favorite broken rice/cold noodle vietnamese places for lunch today. Decided to go with bun since I have been in a bit of a broken rice rut on my previous visits over the last year. Opted for the version with shrimp on sugar cane and meatballs. Overall it was very good though perhaps not quite living up to my memory. The meatballs here are some of the most tender and juicy I have eaten in the viet places in SJ. The sugar cane did not seem to add quite as much flavor to the shrimp mousse as I remembered. Still a very good version of this dish and I think the quality of the chao tom matches the version I tried at Vung Tau a while back.

I do think the rice plates are great here and the best thing to order. I particularly like the Tau Hu Ky which is a stuffed bean curd skin wrap that is just an ideal sponge for fish sauce. The chops (beef or pork) I saw on other diners plates looked great as well. Plus, they have good quality and very aromatic rice which ties everything together and is not just filler.

Prices for bun or rice plates range from $4.75-$6.50 on my older take-out menu.
