Bug in Food - Should I Have Tipped?

Philly Ray | May 20, 201706:30 PM     16

Stopped in a local bar for a quick dinner. I sat at the bar, ordered a beer and some food. Halfway through eating, I found a bug in the plate. I discreetly called the bartender over and showed him. He took the plate back to the kitchen. When he returned, he said that the owner apologizes and wants to offer me a $50 gift certificate. I accepted the offer (although I was kind of thinking that I probably wouldn't want to return anyway) and after additional apologies from the bartender I left.

Afterwards, I started wondering if I should have tipped the bartender. It wasn't his fault about the bug, he handled everything pretty well, and was appropriately apologetic.

I'm sure he wasn't expecting a tip in that situation and I don't know what I would have said if I offered it to him.

What do you think?
