Had a really good all-you-can-eat vegetarian lunch today at Madras Mahal on Lexington Avenue bet. 27th & 28th Streets. They serve the buffet from 12 to 3 weekdays only.
I don't know my dosa from a samosa but I know when Indian food is good and when it's awful. This was very good. While I didn't partake of everything, what I had was terrific especially the fritters and what looked like a buckwheat pancake. The pancake was delicious and crispy, not greasy, on the outside and had different vegetables in the crust. It reminded me of a wonderful potato pancake but with more stuff in it. I'm not crazy about Indian vegetables in sauce as they tend to be overcooked and this was no exception. They had raita and salad and they actually peeled the skin off the cucumber (IMHO a plus). As mentioned, I didn't have everything but there was lots to choose from.
The room is cheery and animated with people (some other restaurants in the area are empty and dreary)and the wait staff was very polite. The whole lunch was $6.95. If you're in the Curry Hill nabe during the week, try it.
