Acting on a tip from a nurse at CHOMP when I headed out for breakfast today, I enjoyed the buffet at Il Fornaio in Carmel. Served Monday through Friday from 8am to 10am, it's only $9.50 and includes beverages (coffee, tea and OJ). I had a very pleasant white-clothed table in the sunny side room overlooking the colorful flower boxes on the patio. Background music is Euro-pop, Italian style.
Good quality thick cut bacon, from scratch scrambled eggs, house-baked zucca muffin and coffeecake, real oatmeal, and strong coffee (plus a to-go cup) were the highlights. French toast was not great, better to self-toast some of the ciabatta bread instead. And the rosemary potatoes were overcooked and soggy. But other than that I was satisfied. The room is much nicer than sitting in a diner and better quality if the choices suit you. It's also a trip to step inside the red velvet interior of the Pine Inn where Il Fornaio is housed.
