What this restaurant has going for it: location, location, location. Overlooking La Grand Place, one of Europe’s most picturesque squares, one chooses this place to sit back, and drink up the sights and sounds as much as its food and beer options. What are its drawbacks? Limited drink options, lackadaisical service, and passable food.
Our dinner this evening consisted of:
- Soupe l’oignon: standard rendition with fairly liquid bouillon topped with bread/melted cheese.
- Larding bacon salad: the lettuce leaves were crisp and fresh, but the sautéed bacon & onions, and chopped fresh tomatoes, were drowned out by overly-acidic balsamic vinegar dressing
- Crottin de Chavignol salad: simply lettuce leaves topped with warm goat’s cheese on toast and walnuts.
- White asparagus soup, which was creamy but rather bland.
- Moules Mariniere: mussels cooked in white wine. Good but not particularly outstanding. One finds this dish of equal standard even at London’s Belgo chain. Nice pommes frites on the side, but the (Heinz) mayonnaise used here did not have an agreeable flavour.
- Gentse Waterzooï (chicken version), a boiled stew (Ghent-style). Pretty standard rendition here - the chicken was fall-off-the-bone tender, and the stew was not overly-rich. Celery, carrots and potatoes complete the dish.
I’ll definitely come back for the views, though not for the food. No fun facing reticent service from staff who stared through one’s waving hands though.
