Brunch at the Mercantile

This might be my new favorite brunch spot, and that's saying something because brunch is one of my favorite meals of the day (in addition to breakfast, luch and dinner). We decided to check it out yesterday because we had had such a great dinner there on Valentine's day and the brunch menu looked amazing.

Fortunately, it tasted the same. I started out with a bloody mary and their house mix is fantastic, with just enough of a peppery kick and none of that sweetness that you get with commercial mixes. I am always on the hunt for a fantastic bloody mary, and this is one of the best versions I've had in town.

We started with the ginger snap pancakes with vanilla soaked prunes, marscapone and marcona almonds. These were the flatter style of pancake, which is what I prefer, and had great ginger flavor, without it being overpowering. A bit of prune, pancake, marscapone and crunchy almond made for a perfect bite. We also shared the duck confit hash, the house smoked trout, the maple glazed pork belly with grits, and the southern benedict. Of these, the only one that was a bit of a miss was the house smoked trout dish, where one of the elements (maybe the frisee salad) was too salty. The southern benedict and the maple glazed pork belly were ridiculously good, however. I loved the tasso ham-crab ragout mixed with the kicky tabasco hollandaise and the combination of the crispy, sweet pork belly with the creamy grits was almost impossible to stop eating even though I was stuffed.

They also have a fantastic selection of cheeses, charcuterie, pastries, housemade ice cream (I'm still dying to try the yogurt ice cream with lemon confit) and then a bunch of really well-selected dry goods ranging from rick's picks smokra to various molecular gastronomy chemicals as well as a very solid selection of wines for purchase. I'll definitely be back soon.
