Brownies -- semi-sweet chocolate?

Nigella's recipe calls for 13 oz. bittersweet and all I have is semi-sweet. It also calls for 1 2/3 cups sugar.

Can I cut the sugar (to a cup, maybe?) and get a similar effect, or do I need to run out for bittersweet?
