Brownies & Cream - New Bakery on Austin St Queens - A lot of work to be done

This new little bakery just opened on Austin St Fri so a couple of friends & I decided to try it over the weekend. They offer several types of brownies, macarons & homemade ice cream. We tried a sample of everything that they offered. Ordering both macarons, trying several of the brownies, and both flavors of their homemade ice cream (They have several flavors but currently only the coffee and cheesecake are homemade.)

The retail space is small and plain.

The Good:

The staff was very nice and helpful had smiles even though it was hectic now and again.

I really enjoyed the macarons - especially the Nutella version. They currently have two: Nutella & raspberry. According to the staff they will soon have more flavors. Both were nice & crunchy & soft on the inside. The fact that I enjoyed them is saying something. I recently spent my honeymoon in France and made a visit to Pierre Herme and a couple of other places and determined that I am really not a macaron fan.

The Bad:

The brownies. If you name begins with the word brownie they better be good. They were not. Beside being pretty small (not a problem if they are rich), they were very dry and had no real chocolate flavor. We tried 4 of the 6(?) varieties and all were extremely dry and flavorless- even the raspberry one which looked like it was going to be nice & gooey. The s'mores version didn't even taste like s'mores. It tasted like toffee - a flavor that I like, but this still was too dry to enjoy. You can get a better brownie out of a box of Ducan & Hines. All the brownies went half eaten, which is extraordinary considering their bite-size.

Ice cream. The second part of their name is "Cream" so you would expect something good. Not so. The coffee ice cream flavoring was good, but it was a scoop of coffee flavored ice crystals. Nothing creamy about that. The cheesecake had the opposite problem in that it was very gummy and the flavors were not well mixed. I am a HUGE fan of ice cream and make a lot of it at home, so the fact that we dumped both half-eaten, again, says something.

If you are going to name your store Brownies & Cream, make sure both are great - or at least good. Both were major disappointments. Perhaps they should change their name to Macaron
