I was bugging around Brooklyn's tiny jewel of a chinatown a few weeks ago and had a meal that I am still thinking about, so here it is for the chow world to check out.
My radar sent me into the Chinese Ocean Restaurant on 8th Ave near 58th street even though there was no menu outside. There was a good size dining room filled with mostly asian families and a couple of chowish-looking groups (and I have NO idea what exactly that looks like!)
I was hunting solo so only tried 2 dishes - the soy sauce chicken and the dried string beans with pork. That chicken has haunted me since! Dribbly-moist, not too salty, completely yummy. The string beans were tasty and meaty and when I first looked at the dish I thought too greasy. My my stomach is a never fail bad-oil radar and it passed my tummy test. I was so smitten with the chicken that I asked for an order to go but they had run out.
I hope to return to this place because there were so many great looking dishes coming out of the kitchen. I saw very few posts on this 'hood and i really love it, it's such a concentrated and isolated little community.
More fun in many ways that the other chinese communities in NYC.
