Brookhaven Foods -- UN of Markets

Apologies if this is old news, but in the SW suburb of Darien at 75th and Cass Ave. (a stone's throw from the Jewel) is an independent grocery that is remarkable for its range of great produce and dry goods catering to the area's new imigrant population. While this 'hood is a bleak place to look for a restaurant, I can't imagine a better grocery anywhere. Most of the staff is Mexican, and Mexican fruits and vegetables apparently are trucked in with some frequency, as everything is ripe, cheap and ready to eat when you buy it. No rock hard tomatoes or avacados here. What's really impresive though is the selection of fresh produce aimed at the Filipino, Indian/Pakistani, and Eastern European (Polish, Serb, Bosnian) people who shop here as well. They also have a relatively strong selection of Italian food (e.g. hard-to-find pasta shapes like Trofie from Liguria)and some Carribean stuff (e.g., Cuban dry staples like Guava paste, canned Fabada, etc.). In all, a strange and wonderful place.
