Last weekend we ate a restaurant that deserves a special drive- Restaurant 1881 on US 395 in Bridgeport. It's about one hour from Mammoth Lakes and probably 2 hours from Reno. Why such a nice restaurant is in such a remote place, I do not know, but we were glad to find it.
Restaurant 1881 is in an historic home (built in 1881), in which the walls have been scraped back inside to reveal the original brick. The home is very nicely restored, making for a good setting. The food, apparently cooked using the owner's recipes by a self-taught chef, was excellent. We had salads, two main courses and dessert, and were pleasantly surprised that everything was excellent. We had trout with pine nut sauce and lamb with pistachio sauce for main dishes; both were extremely tasty and cooked perfectly.
Without wine, the total bill was just $60, so it's quite reasonable for this quality of food. Also, although it is in a nice setting, the atmosphere is very casual- lots of diners in shorts and tennis shoes. Finally, although not stated on their website, reservations are recommended on the weekend- we were glad to have one, or else it would have been a 90 minute wait for a table.
