We went back to the Brickhouse in Venice on Monday. We used to go all the time, but moved away and hadn't been back in a while. The day off gave us a chance to go back.
Always one of our faves for healthy but hearty breakfast.
The wife ordered a tofu scramble. This used to be my favorite, but I've been cutting down on the carbs lately. It's a whole pile of cubed tofu, sauteed with shoyu and a little sesame oil and a great big pile of vegetables (peppers, broccoi, spinach) over Brickhouse potatoes. Brickhouse potatoes are really good hash browns, cooked as pretty crispy, though if you want them more crisy they'll do it.
Teen son and I both had the turkey chorizo scramble, with black beans. It comes with choice of fruit of those potatoes; he had fruit, I passed on both. Excellent, fresh tasting eggs here and good beans. I also has a smoothie made of peanut butter and soy milk. Delicious.
Ten year old son had stuffed french toast. They stuff it with cream cheese, bananas and walnuts. He ate the whole plate (and he doesn't really eat that much).
Couple of other notes. I cut out coffee last summer, so I didn't have any. But the Brickhouse always had excellent coffee, espressos, lattes and the like. Big cups, too. Their olive bread is something I crave at times and I sort of regret going with tortillas instead of toast -- I sort of blew it there.
One other semi-note:
Because of the way we order and the above description, I feel like I give the impression that the Brickhous is a health food restaurant. And that's a turn off for some.
The Brickhouse is not a health food restaurant. I just as easily could have ordered egges with great bacon or ham. The do wonderful eggs benedict with some variations. We like it because it's fresh and because there are healthy choices if that's the way we want to go. (Sort of like Ronnie's Diner, which I've pimped here before).
On the weekend, you'll need the paper because the wait can get sort of long. It's worth it.
The Brickhouse is on Brooks in Venice, a block east of Main down the street from Gold's Gym. It's a good choice for breakfast in that neighborhood. They also have lunch, but are closed for dinner.
