After reading the glowing Times review this week, I wanted to check this new place out.
What a disappointment!! Admittedly, I didn't try a lot of things, but based on what I had, I wouldn't go back.
We had the aloo chat appetizer, which was a cold dish with potatoes, chickpeas, etc. Pretty good flavor, can't complain too much about that. Or the onion kulcha, a really great bread.
The entrees, however, left a lot to be desired. The Times raved about the Makhani dal, so we ordered that. It was one of the most overly-rich dishes I've ever eaten - mostly a very heavy creamy sauce which started to congeal as it sat there. Maybe if you had a slotted spoon to get out the black lentils, it would be better! It tasted pretty good at first bite, but you couldn't eat more than a small bit of this stuff. They should serve a portion that's about a quarter of the size, maybe as a side dish.
The vindaloo was also overly saucy, not spicy at all, and one-dimensional. Quite a dull dish.
I think Banjara next door is far better.
