Breakfast at Hill Street...and in general

Will Owen | Mar 29, 2005 05:50 PM

Met with an old (VERY old) school chum for lunch at Hill Street in La Canada today. I was pleased to see breakfast menus included in the pile on the table, as mine had been just oatmeal and an orange and I was 'way open to the possibility of Eggs and Something. Got two over easy with bratwurst, Potatoes O'Brien, biscuit and gravy. Well, it was okay: bratwurst not the best, kinda bland and greasy (as opposed to snappy and fatty); the biscuit was passable, but the gravy came mostly from a box; the potatoes were fried to a crisp, though that's probably just how they like was not bad for eight bucks, and I will go back sometime. Dave sucked up his ham, cheese and mushroom omelet with obvious pleasure, and pronounced it good. But then he liked the gravy, too...

"Breakfast Served Anytime" is my favorite phrase to see on just about any menu. In this paradise of homey coffee shops, there are quite a few great breakfast joints that have been mentioned on this board from time to time. I'd like to propose a revisitation of that topic, homing in on the one or two places we know of that we wouldn't want to be without, or that might even merit a major detour or crosstown pilgrimage. Anyone else into that?
