Bread machine help!

I just got a bread machine for christmas, and am currently making my second loaf.

The first one didn't really turn out so well, and I figured it was because i used cold water instead of warm.

I had high hopes for the second attempt as part way through the rising period, my 1.5lb mix looked lovely and filled the pan with an even and smooth loaf appearance.

now it's gone through what I guess is the final kneading process, it's torn it all up, and looks pretty terrible again. I will reserve full judgement of course once it's baked, but is this a normal experience?
