Two for One @ Bread Garden

Melanie Wong | Feb 22, 200410:33 PM

After an extended absence, I stopped by the Bread Garden in the tow of a chowish friend who referred to this stretch of sidewalk shared with Rick & Ann’s as his “happy place” in the East Bay. It was all the more special for the dramatic view of the Claremont’s shimmering golden glow framed by a clear blue patch of sky peeking out from the gray clouds.

Our mission was the 2-for-1 mark-down that starts at 6pm. There was still quite a bit left on the racks even at this hour on Friday. Fat braids of challah beckoning to be made into sublime French toast, heavy rustic loaves of crusty bread, and sweet and savory rolls and buns of all sizes and shapes calling for us to take them home. Yet, with admirable restraint, my companion selected but two pairs of buns for purchase.

Next we pulled into Royal Coffee to buy fair trade beans scoring a complimentary cup of brew. The strong and rich coffee was the perfect foil for the Bread Garden’s sticky bun. The sticky bun was light, airy, buttery rich, and amply layered with nuts. It still had its crisp edge and fresh bounciness late in the day. True to its name, the buttered caramel glaze was good and sticky. A bit of sweetness for a lovely snack.
